Why a 100-mile Fence Controller makes sense

Featured Product: Zareba EAC100M-Z - 100-Mile Range Electric Fence Controller

Zareba’s EAC100M-Z 100-Mile Fence Controller is one of the most powerful and effective on the market today and, as a result, is the subject of today’s “Featured Product.” Before we dive in, its important to note that the terms “Fence Controller”, “Fence Charger”, “Fence Energizer”, and simply “Fencer” are often used interchangeably in the industry to refer to the device that produces an electric shock on your fence.

100 Miles of Fence?

Over the years, many folks have asked us at events like Dakota Fest, “Do I really need a 100-mile Fence Controller?” since few have fences that long. The answer isn’t about the miles it covers, but rather its ability to control problem animals. We’ve all been there, staring at a beast with a will of its own, undeterred by weak shocks. Whether it’s a young foal, too quick to feel the full jolt, a bull or stallion driven by compelling instincts, or a cow that craves the greener grass on the other side.

A few farmers have felt its power personally and they have all been impressed with its power, as this review from the Zareba website indicates:

“I love it, best charger I ever had and you learn quick not to touch it.” The Don

The Details

The EAC100M-Z Zareba 100-Mile Fence Controller is powered by an 110-volt AC outlet. Besides keeping animals in, it will also help to keep predators out. It powers through heavy weeds and at its peak, it’ll produce over 6 joules of output energy on the fence. the fence energizer. Built in the USA, this fencer comes with a 2-year warranty which can be extended to 3-years when registering online. It is packaged with a free “Storm Guard” that’s designed to protect fence chargers from lightning damage. Its also one the most powerful UL-Listed fencers on the market.

Storm Guard

As I just mentioned, the Zareba 100-Mile Fence Controller comes complimentary with a Storm Guard Lightning Module. This clever device, when connected to the fence and ground terminals, offers a path for lightning strikes that hit the fence wire, thereby safeguarding the controller. The concept is for the Storm Guard to get damaged while protecting the fencer from damage - saving hundreds of dollars. Its not completely foolproof, but when installed properly, it reduces the chances that your Zareba fencer will be damaged from lighning. I should note that the Storm Guard seems to work better when the Zareba 100-Mile Fence Controller is properly grounded with a minimum of 3-ground rods installed.

Storm Guard

But, there is a trade-off for the Storm Guard protection. Once the Storm Guard is installed, the output voltage drops by a couple thousands of volts. This does not make the Zareba 100-Mile fencer less powerful or “smaller.” It still packs the same powerful energy to those problem animals I mentioned above. Whether that trade-off is worth it is a matter of personal preference, but like insurance, its better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
